Here is a new word to add to your lexicon – sultry. Well I guess just a new definition which is hot and humid as it pertains to the weather or air. I am not quite sure how this word for hot, humid, and completely horrid weather became associated with attractive and suggestive women. There is absolutely nothing attractive about the weather we have been experiencing. We were dripping with sweat today by 8:30 in the morning and it doesn’t look like it will relent any time soon. The forecast is for it to continue in the mid 90s the rest of the week. Today we had a high of 97 but it felt like 107. Each evening we set a new goal for hitting the road. Today we got rolling at 7, tomorrow we’ll aim for 6.
We aren’t the only ones getting up before dawn to beat the heat. We passed a couple from the Netherlands yesterday riding west bound. They were in their late 50s or early 60s. His name is Joseph but I didn’t catch her name. We chatted a bit and headed on to find two more riders also from the Netherlands. One in his early 20s the other late 20s. When we heard “Netherlands” we chirped up and mentioned the couple just 10 miles ahead of them. Turns out the couple are their parents, and doing a touring vacation isn’t that weird for the Dutch because they are “biking out of the cradle” according to the younger brother. Everyone has lots of bikes, but lots are stolen too. It was funny to see older brother force younger brother to admit getting older brother’s bike stolen when younger brother barrowed for school. (I hope that wasn’t too confusing but I couldn’t catch the Dutch names.) But no worries, older brother still has a racing biking and a “trashy bike” to get around on.
Jake Report:
Miles:74.5, time on bike: 5h 50m, average: 12.8, weather: hot and sunny,
