We are exploring Saratoga, WY today. Before you travel through Wyoming you need to know about the winds here – they are over the top. We checked the weather last night and were forecasted for nearly 30 mph winds with gusts on top of that. Who knows what they really reached, all we know was that it was on the miserable scale. The original plan was to go to Encampment, WY but we decided to end the day early here in Saratoga.
It has been a great afternoon here. For lunch Josh got a Coney Island hotdog and I tried a bratwurst with coleslaw. Delicious, and I should mention they were both a foot long. We then headed around the block to the Lollypop for our celebratory ice cream. After we finish each map (we are now on map 6 of 12) we give ourselves a pat on the back and a mini food coma. We were debating between the hand dipped cookie dough or cheesecake chunks, but when we heard what was in the Mississippi Mud we were sold. We got a tall waffle cone filled with chocolate ice cream containing a hint of espresso and Oreo bits swirled in. We met deliciousness again.
This town (population about 1500) not only has a lunch of champions but you can soothe your aching biking muscles at the local hot spring for free! After the initial greeting of “hello,” everyone we talked to here had, “Are you going to go to the hot spring?” on their lips. We took their advice and popped on over to soak our legs.
While at the spring we met Phil and Marsha, a local couple, and had a nice conversation about Wyoming, the spring, and biking. The last couple days we've been in pretty barren territory and therefore have extra enjoyed our conversations with others. We have a warm showers host tonight and I hope we don’t act socially deprived.
I before I forget we biked on I-80 today for 13 miles. It was rather uneventful as the semis moved over and the shoulder was wide and in good condition.
Jake Report:
Miles: 45.5, time on bike: 5h 3m, average: 9.0, weather: strong headwind, strong crosswind
